Healing Happens in Community: Dual Diagnosis Treatment at Beit T’Shuvah
Living with both addiction and a mental health challenge, or a dual diagnosis, isn’t just hard. It’s exhausting. The depression feeds the drinking. The anxiety fuels the drug use. The shame makes you want to disappear. And the more you try to “just fix one problem,” the more the other one pulls you back down.
That’s why recovery has to address both substance use and mental health at the same time. And at Beit T’Shuvah, we’ve learned something else: it can’t happen alone.
More than Just a Treatment Center
Beit T’Shuvah isn’t a place where you show up, get “treated”, and leave. It’s a living, breathing community of people who have been where you are. Some have just walked through the door. Others have been around for years. Regardless, everyone is here for the same reason: to find a way out of the cycle and back into a way of living more beautiful than they could have imagined. You may come here to get sober, but you will finish the program with new meaning and purpose.
We believe the community itself is a significant part of the healing process. Sure, therapy, psychiatry, and structure are crucial. But so is sitting across from someone who knows what it is like to struggle with mental health and addiction issues. So is hearing “me too” when you finally share the thing you swore you’d take to the grave. So is being held accountable by people who care too much to let you fall through the cracks.
Treating the Whole Person
Dual diagnosis treatment at Beit T’Shuvah means you get real, individualized care. This includes:
— Individual therapy to work through trauma, anxiety, or depression, as well as other factors that perpetuate the addiction.
— Group therapy where you learn, argue, cry, and laugh with people who understand.
— Psychiatric care to help stabilize your mood, in addition to supporting treatment of co-occurring disorders.
— Spiritual guidance—rooted in Jewish values but open to all—to help you find meaning and purpose.
— Creative outlets like art, music, and writing can help connect and express in different ways.
And all of it happens inside a community that knows your name, your story, and your patterns. A community that will allow you to be your authentic self.
Not Your Average Addiction Treatment Center
Some of our residents have been to other treatment centers before. Some have been kicked out of programs. Others were told they were “too difficult” or “treatment-resistant.” We don’t buy into that. When someone walks through our doors, we look at the whole person and do the work to ensure they feel seen, heard, and respected. It doesn’t mean we will always agree, but it does mean we will put in the work to ensure they have the best opportunity to heal and recover.
Beit T’Shuvah offers long-term residential care, outpatient programs, sober living, and family support. We also have a strong alumni network that stays connected long after people leave, because as our founder says, “if you don’t come back to visit, you come back to stay.”
Why It Works
Recovery at Beit T’Shuvah works because it’s real life. You learn how to live sober while dealing with everyday stress, conflicts, and responsibilities while living in a supportive recovery community. You don’t just get tools; you practice using them every day, surrounded by people who are rooting for you.
At Beit T’Shuvah, we don’t just treat dual diagnosis. We help people regain their dignity, discover their purpose, and find belonging.
If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction and mental health, and you’re looking for dual diagnosis treatment in Los Angeles that’s grounded in connection, accountability, and hope, our doors are always open.
