[vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”full”] Beit T’Shuvah’s Circle of Majesty is thrilled to honor Judy Flesh with this year’s Majesty Service Award. The award recognizes women who, with their time and talents, exemplify the spirit of volunteerism that enriches the Beit T’Shuvah community.
Judy began facilitating an art psychotherapy group at Beit T’Shuvah 19 years ago with the late Helen B. Landgarten. Judy has continued to donate her time and expertise on a weekly basis so that residents can benefit from art therapy, a discipline that combines psychotherapy and art into a powerful healing practice. When she’s not volunteering at Beit T’Shuvah, you can find Judy at Loyola Marymount University’s Art Therapy Clinic, where she works with teen mothers and homeless female veterans.
Judy graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in fine arts and a minor in psychology. Later, she earned a Master’s Degree from Immaculate Heart College in clinical art psychotherapy. Judy and her husband Tom met on a blind date and have been married 41 years; they have four married children, five grandchildren with three more on the way–all girls, by the way. (What a summer for the Flesh family!)
The integration of art and therapy can be profoundly healing for those who can’t find the right words to describe their feelings. “Art therapy offers a way for residents to express themselves and connect to their inner selves. They can draw what they are feeling and express themselves in a safe place,” says Judy.
Judy wants art therapy to be a permanent part of Beit T’Shuvah’s clinical programming and is excited to establish the Orden/Flesh Art Therapy Endowment Fund which will make this possible. Her dedication, compassion and leadership are tremendous gifts to this community, and we applaud her for helping us all heal for the past 19 years. Please join us in honoring Judy’s contribution to Beit T’Shuvah.
