Serenity through Sound: The Sondra and Marvin Smalley Music in Recovery Program
At Beit T’Shuvah, music plays a major role in recovery. It’s what distinguishes us from other treatment centers, and what sets us apart from other synagogues. It is an agent for community, creativity, and discovery.
Our musical programming is designed to help residents find their voice, sound, and passion.
Residents, alumni, and community members find the voice within while being a part of something greater than themselves. The choir performs at Shabbat services, at High Holidays, fundraisers, private concerts, and often collaborates with other temples. Anyone can join the choir; no one is turned away.
A central part of our congregation’s musical experience, the BTS band brings life to our services. Whether writing original music, or setting Hebrew prayers to popular tunes, the band creates the sound behind our weekly and themed Shabbats, plays at the annual Gala, and is often part of other events throughout the year.
All for One, One for All
Talent shows, resident-led Shabbats, and “jamming” sessions are all ways in which we seek to include each soul. Songwriting, private lessons, and music groups are provided on an ongoing basis. The Music Department works closely with the clinical team to enhance every individual’s recovery process.
BTS Music Publishing
Beit T’Shuvah has its very own professional music studio and publishing company. Many of our residents have deep professional backgrounds in the music industry; others are just beginning to explore their passion in sobriety. The BTS Music Publishing Company was created to nurture and harness this talent through the Songwriter’s Collective.Learn more
